The state's top mine safety regulator says he's resigning because of personal reasons.

Paris Charles has served as executive director of the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing since July 2004. His resignation is effective Friday.

Charles says he wants to spend more time with his family in Pikeville.

He says his agency's accomplishments include studying the safety of retreat mining and helping promote legislation on substance abuse in the mines.

Johnny Greene, an accident investigator and mine rescue coordinator for the agency, will be his interim replacement.
