Jessica's Law

Last June, Ben and Brenda Matlock's 17-year-old daughter Jessica was killed in a car accident in Bowling Green. Jessica was not wearing her seatbelt. Now, the Matlock's are trying to get a bill passed to stop other teens from driving without buckling up. They want to call it Jessica's Law.

"We're trying to get a teen law passed for kids that are 16 to 18...if you get pulled over once and you aren't buckled get your license taken away for three months. If they get pulled over a second time without a seatbelt, they would lose their license for a year", says Ben Matlock.

Democrat Representative Rob Wilkey is also pushing for a seatbelt bill, a Primary Seatbelt Law that would apply to everyone.

"We lost 984 people in Kentucky last year...families that were devastated because their loved one was lost in an auto accident...2/3 of those people were not wearing their seatbelts", says Wilkey.

The Matlock's support the Primary Bill, but they still want to make people aware of the teenager bill that they are trying to get support for.

"We're losing too many teenagers right now...we lost a beautiful daughter and we don't want parents to go through what we go through everyday", says Matlock.

"They're not doing this for themselves...they're doing this to spare other families a kind of devastation...the misery and suffering that they have had to go through from losing Jessica and I certainly respect what they're doing", says Wilkey.

The Matlock's are still trying to gain support for Jessica's Law and urge you to write your legislators if you also want to see this law passed.

They will be speaking at a press conference at the Franklin Fire Department in Simpson County at 7:00 Friday, February 10 in support of the Primary Seatbelt Law that is currently being discussed in the General Assembly.
