ABC felt the effects of war close to home when an anchor and photographer were injured in Iraq.

One of the first people on the scene who gave aid to Bob Woodruff and Doug Vogt is from Elizabethtown.

45-year-old 1st Sgt. John McFarlane retired from the army after 21 years, but was called back in.

He was in Iraq, just a few vehicles behind the one carrying the news crew, when the bomb exploded.

"First thing I saw was Doug bleeding heavily from the face. Made a quick assessment of him and realized that he was going to be an ambulatory case. Then I looked over and I saw Bob who had collapsed on the floor. And my initial assessment of him was that he was dead," said Sergeant McFarlane.

He had been training and working with the Iraqi army during his stint in Iraq.

On Friday, he was named one of ABC's people of the week.
