Country music singer John Michael Montgomery is facing drug and weapons charges in Lexington.

Police arrested Montgomery early this morning after he ran a red light at the intersection of Tates Creek Road and Laredo Drive.

The singer will be arraigned this afternoon, but attorneys say he won't be in court.

Police say the 41-year-old is charged with DUI, possession of a controlled substance, having a prescription drug not in its proper container, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

Attorney Jon Woodall says Montgomery has never been in a position like this before and hates it. Woodall says it's too early to tell whether he will fight the charges.

Police say the singer smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage and failed a field sobriety test.

Jail spokesman Darin Kelly says Montgomery has been released from custody.

Montgomery is a Kentucky native and has a home in Nicholasville. He had several number one hit singles in the 1990s including "I Love the Way You Love Me" and "I Swear."
