February 28th is National Doris Day Spay Day.
The 2006 campaign "Do It For Love" encourages all pet owners to get their pets spayed or neutered the month of February.
Director of the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society Lorri Haare pets a large Black Lab and laughs "He's just a big player."
She's right, "Jack" is a rambunctious lab that needs room to move.
Under the new Animal Ordinance by the Bowling Green City Commission , you can own five animals just like "Jack". Haare says the number will help.
"I know people who can care for five, but I also know people who can't care for one."
For example. If just one cat isn't spayed, her offspring can multiply into a whopping 450,000 in just seven years.
That's why the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society is packed; Too many owners think their animal won't reproduce. Haare says their wrong. Female dogs go into heat every 6 months depending on the breed. "Heat" means they are looking for a mate.
The heat cycle can sometimes last up to 21 days.
Just because you have puppies doesn't stop an animal from becoming aggressive as they seek to find a female in heat.
Haare says all their animals neutered before they're adopted. That's if they're adopted.
"Jack" is the perfect example of a veterinarians worst nightmare.
If he doesn't find a home he'll be put to sleep.
"There's no worse feeling than euthanizing because there's no home."
Haare says what happened to"Jack" happens too often. "The people who had this dog didn't do the right thing ... and take him to the vet."
"Jack" uses three legs to get around.
He was hit by a car a few months ago and his owners didn't take care of his injury. It will have to be amputated.
"It's going to be 4-500 dollars." The Humane Society is taking donations to give "Jack" a better life, and one day a home.
"Jack deserves a better life than what he started off with."
