Asking children younger than 27 months to use the toilet can make the learning process longer, according to a study from the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

Toilet training for toddlers younger than 27 months typically took between 10 months and 14.5 months. For children older than 27 months, the potty training only took between five and nine-and-a-half months.

Doctor Mark Lowry says the best time depends on your child. When your child starts to show interest in using the toilet, start talking with him or her about it.

Lowry says your child will let you know when he or she is ready.
