Governor Fletcher has called on horse industry representatives to settle their differences over legislation that would provide workers' compensation insurance coverage to jockeys. He made the suggestion yesterday in Frankfort.
The bill would create the Kentucky Jockey Injury Fund that would be financed by race tracks and horse owners. It was drafted based on recommendations from a panel appointed by Fletcher.
Under the legislation, sponsored by Democratic Representative Carolyn Belcher of Preston, all licensed jockeys and apprentice jockeys would be covered.
The legislation had been approved by the House Licensing and Occupations Committee, but was later sent back to resolve differences over proposed funding. Horse industry representatives met Monday morning to examine funding options.
