It was a literal "symphony of sound" on July 22 as Western Kentucky University hosted its "String Explosion 2008."

The annual camp is in its third year at WKU, offering music students from 4th-9th grades the chance to play in an orchestra setting.

Children learn new skills through a variety of hands-on activities.

Instructors say the summer camp is a good opportunity for strings students to continue learning their instruments.

"We have strings in the Bowling Green city schools and in the county schools, so this is an opportunity for them to get together during the summer, and refresh their skills and work on all the things that we work on during the year," said Sarah Berry.

String Explosion 2008 continues through Friday, working with violin, viola, cello and double-bass students from around the area.

What a wonderful opportunity for kids in our area! We are lucky to have such a camp in our community. It only makes our Hometown and Hometown Television better. Thanks for covering this.

Thank you for showing, on television, a snapshot of a section of a piece that will be performed on Friday's concert. I, for one, am grateful for the publicity and am hoping that because of it there will be higher attendance at the concert. -From the second chair of the first violins
