Mother Reacts To Shock Jock's Autism Rant
"Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket," said nationally syndicated radio jock, Michael Savage.

What do you do when an autistic child is hendering someelses education? A teacher may not be able to teach and discipline in that environment. I think austistic children must learn to control behavior and then can easily be reintroduce to the mainstream class room. I think schools should onsite OTs and para-professionals. We can't lock up and throw kids away. They need to be productive adults, citizens, taxpayers mothers and fathers.

Lesley- I said nothing of an autistic child not being able to learn in the setting. Maybe you should read my original post again. If anything I say we should build a school with trained workers to educate and care for them. BUT THEY HAVE NO BUSINESS IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL. My brother is autistic and I spent the first 18 years of my life with him. When you have a six year old little girl whom is scared to be in the classroom with the screaming autistic eleven year old boy then please speak up with your opinion.

Todd- your comments about children with Autism do not have a place in public schools is just as obscene as what Michael Savage has said. You obviously haven't been around a child with Autism or seen one grow and exceed in a school setting.

Well said, Jessica. It couldn't be better stated as to how to take Savage's comments. Why dignify such comments by responding to them?

I could not believe the comment made by the uneducated "savage" Michael Savage. I have a 7 year old son who has high functioning autism with a sensory disorder and believe me it has nothing to do with discipline. Our son struggles everyday with communication, socialization, self-injury and I can not imagine any child wanting to be this way. I have two older children who do not have autism so does that mean they are not brats but my son is? This guy should keep his comments to himself especially on something that he obviously doesn't know anything about.

I think that it is a shame that someone this uneducated can be on public airways where he can be heard by so many people. It has taken years for researchers, doctors, children and families dealing with Autism to be at the point where they are now; acknowledging the disease and working together to make the sufficient strides for positive outcomes and give hope to children and families dealing Autism. As an early childhood educator, I am offeneded and appauled that this man can speak of these children in such a hateful manner. He clearly has no idea what Autism entails for a child and their families nor does he have compassion or common sense.

I AM WRITING ABOUT MR. SAVAGE'S COMMENTS . THESE COMMENTS COME FROM A GROWN MAN ON PUBLIC RADIO . I CAN NOT BELIEVE WE HAVE THIS KIND OF IGNORANCE STILL OUT THERE. THE KIDS WITH AUTISM AND THEIR FAMILIES HAVE WORKED SO HARD TO GET THIS OUT THERE. PPL DIDN'T HARDLY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT AND THE CHILDREN SUFFERED. YOU LET THAT MAN BE IN THE ROOM WITH AUTISTIC CHILDREN AND SEE IF HE DON'T NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE. I MEAN MY CHILD HAS HAD PROBLEMS EVERY SINCE HE WAS A TODDLER HE IS NOT A BRAT AND HE REALLY WANTS TO PLEASE HIS MOM AND DAD. HE WANTS TO WRITE AND DO LIKE THE OTHER CHILDREN DO BUT HE JUST CAN'T. HE IS A HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISTIC CHILD AND HE IS A BLESSING FROM GOD. I WOULDN'T TRY TO CHANGE HIS HEART FOR NOTHING. HE JUST HAS PROBLEMS WITH EVERYDAY STUFF. NOW WHAT KIND OF MOTHER WOULD I BE TO SPANK HIM AND BE MEAN TO HIM FOR THE THINGS HE CAN'T UNDERSTAND.???? OR IF I CALLED HIM A BRAT???? MR. SAVAGE YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF AND MY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL.

I agree this guy should be made to spend some time with a autistic child. He has no idea. But, I don't like the fact with the no child left behind act my tax dollars must be spent to hire an additional caregiver to attend to these children in the classroom. They are very disruptive in the classroom setting and have no business at a public school. It's counter productive to educating other children. I know parents of these children will not agree. However, You know it's true.

As a mother of an autistic child, I am angry that people can be so ignorant about these conditions. My child is such a blessing to me, and has never had violent behavior. The only thing I would change for him would be the ignorance of others. Everyone has some kind of disability. Ignorance is a form of disability. They need to educate themselves on such matters and less time talking about areas in which they have no knowledge at all.

dr. savage's comments were taken out of context. he is trying to expose the fact that the pharmaceutical companies are pushing thier drugs no matter the cost. they have lined the pockets of the fda, colleges, hospitals etc.. did you know that our children are profiled for disorders and prescribed nice drugs like ritalin. if you look at albert einstein's childhood behavior, and use todays checklist that is used on our children, you will conclude that albert would have been druged out of his gourd before he entered highschool. dr.savage (2 master degrees, a phd and several books etc.) is very sympathetic toward children with autism and wants them to get the best care possible. if you are interested in the facts, check out savage's website.

Who cares? So some idiot out there thinks autism doesn't exist. He is obviously uninformed and more than welcome to live out his life in blissful ignorance. Does anyone really care what the opinion of this bumbling idiot is?

As an educator and parent of a very young child with autism, I find Mr. Savage's comments extremely offensive.. He seems like an uneducated big-mouthed jerk. No one I mean no one would ever choose autism. It is extremely difficult to live and work with...yet there is something so adorable and innocent about our children with autism. I have worked with many autistic children, all different spectrums, all different ages, and believe me that guy has NO idea what their parents and families go through... I wish I had his phone number, but it is probably better if I just write this response.
