A two-year-old boy has died after being hit with a baseball bat during a sporting event at a church in eastern Jefferson County.

Harrods Creek Fire Department Chief Chris Aponte told The Courier-Journal that the boy died after being struck on July 22 at a ball field at Springdale Community Church.

Aponte said the child was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Louisville police spokesman Phil Russell said officers are not investigating the incident.

Russell said it appears the death is a "tragic accident."

A church spokesman, Jeremie Wade, referred questions to the YMCA of Louisville.

A message left with the YMCA by The Associated Press was not immediately returned on July 23.
