The House unanimously passed the "Grandparents’ Rights Bill" this afternoon. It now heads to Governor Fletcher for approval.

The bill is geared toward grandparents and is designed to make their legal authority more accessible.

The bill would require the Administrative Office of the Courts to develop a standard power of attorney to give grandparents the authority to make vital decisions the children under their care.

Local circuit clerks would have to make such legal authority available to the grandparents.

The bill also sets up a support program for such caregivers. The state will establish a toll-free number to provide information on such services as child care, child support, housing assistance and medical coverage.
