Old Buildings Become New

The Kentucky Heritage Council's Web site says it's concerned that many of the Commonwealth's older school buildings are threatened.

However some school districts, like Hart County, are turning to renovation when it can.

Memorial Elementary was built in 1919 and it burned in 1942. The building that stands now was completed in 1943.

When it was time to update the school, the Hart County School District decided to renovate instead of rebuild to preserve the building.

Steve Caven, the principal, says: "Some of the old things that remain are like the archways over doors, over hallways, and the banister going to the upstairs at the front of the building is still with us."
