Franklin Mayor & Commissioners Get Pay Increase

Franklin City Commissioner Henry Stone says: "Just four years ago the salaries were raised and adjusted. And in four years I really can't see doubling the commissioners and tripling the mayor's."

Stone was the lone vote against an ordinance recommending a pay increase for Franklin City Commissioners and the mayor at the April 24 meeting. The reading passed with a four to one vote.

Stone says: "It's not personal and it shouldn't be about the present members of the city commission or the mayor. I consider all of them good friends."

The ordinance would not only increase their pay, but would also provide health insurance for commissioners. The mayor already receives health insurance. The changes won't go into effect until January 1st of 2007.

Mayor Jim Brown says: "We took a look at it and decided we were still probably way behind what it should be to basically allow people who work for a living to help donate their time to the city government."

Commissioner Stone feels the city manager handles all of the city's administrative duties and therefore he believes the money could go toward another purpose, but Mayor Brown says everyone has gotten too worked up over the issue.

Brown says: "I think it's an issue that's potentially alarming to people when it's brought up. But when people start looking at the dollars and then compare it to their time, I think they're a little more understanding."

The combined total of all the salary increases is $40,000. Commissioner Stone says if all the commissioners elect to get health insurance that's another $60,000. And he feels the city could better use that money.
