MORE AND MORE CHILDREN ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH A NEUROLOGICAL BRAIN DISORDER CALLED AUTISM.
BOWLING GREEN AND THE SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY AREA IS QUIETLY POISED TO BECOME A POWERFUL RESOURCE FOR PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS.
A FEW YEARS AGO... FUNDING WAS CUT FOR SOME THERAPIES CRUCIAL TO THOSE YOUNGSTERS.
A SMALL GROUP SET OUT TO RAISE PRIVATE MONEY FOR THE CLINICAL EDUCATION COMPLEX...A CENTER AIMED AT SERVING FAMILIES FACING A WIDE ARRAY OF NEEDS.
WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY WAS EAGER TO PARTNER IN THE PROJECT AND HAD ALSO SIGNED ON TO BE PART OF THE KELLY AUTISM PROGRAM.
DON'T LET THE SCENERY FOOL YOU...THE KELLY AUTISM PROGRAM... or KAP.. IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN TUTORING...
STAFF MEMBERS--- COMPRISED MOSTLY OF SPECIAL EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION DISORDERS MAJORS--- HONE THEIR CRAFT BY GIVING MUCH NEEDED ONE ON ONE TIME TO ADOLESCENT AND ADULT AUTISTIC STUDENTS.
BUT THEY ALSO PROVIDE MUCH NEEDED SOCIAL INTERACTION TO HELP THESE YOUNG ADULTS MATURE INTO PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS.

DR.MARTY BOMAN HAS BEEN WITH THE PROGRAM FOR TWO YEARS AND WILL SOON TAKE OVER AS DIRECTOR.
SHE'S THANKFUL JOHN AND LINDA KELLY...WHOSE 19 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER VICTORIA IS AUTISTIC ...BROUGHT KAP TO THE AREA.

WORK IS NEARING COMPLETION ON WESTERN'S CLINICAL EDUCATION COMPLEX OR C-E-C....
IT WILL HOUSE THE KAP PROGRAM.
THE CENTER WILL BE A HUB OF SERVICE, TRAINING AND RESEARCH....CATERING TO PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE REGION WITH DISABILITIES.
FOR SUZANNE VITALE, IT'S THE FULFILLMENT OF A NEED, A DREAM AND A MISSION.
SUZANNE HELPED LEAD THE EFFORT FOR THE C-E-C SHORTLY AFTER LEARNING HER SEVEN YEAR OLD GRANDSON PHILIP WAS AUTISTIC.
FOR YOUNG KIDS LIKE PHILIP ...AND OLDER ONES LIKE VICTORIA KELLY....THE C-E-C IS A CHANCE TO GET THE KIND OF ATTENTION THEY NEED TO REALIZE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.
AND THROUGH THE KELLY AUTISM PROGRAM....SOME AUTISTIC STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO GO ON TO EARN THEIR COLLEGE DEGREES.
"We have one boy and one girl and that's been wonderful having our first two students on campus...Never in a million years did their parents think they would go to college.
MEANWHILE, THE KELLY AUTISM PROGRAM IS STARTING TO GET INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION.
