The Simpson County occupational tax of .75% goes into effect today.
The new tax will generate about $1.25 million for the county, helping to offset a $750,000 budget deficit. The deficit was incurred because of a lack of revenue from the county jail coupled with increased expenses.
Simpson County Judge Jim Henderson says businesses have a grace period to begin implementing the new occupational tax.
