A 101st Airborne Division soldier from Bowling Green was killed in Iraq this week.

Military officials say 32-year-old Staff Sergeant Santiago M- Halsel was an infantryman. He was killed on Tuesday when a bomb went off near his dismounted patrol in Baghdad.

Halsel was a member of the Company C, Second Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment with the Second Brigade Combat Team.

He joined the Army in 1996 and was based at Fort Campbell with the 101st Airborne Division.

Halsel's wife, Susan, and his two children live in Bowling Green. His father, Vesdon Brooks, lives in Lexington.

Including Halsel, 150 soldiers from Fort Campbell have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003.

The family appreciates the outpouring of support from the community, but asks that no one try to contact them at this time. Arrangements for Staff Sgt. Halsel are pending.
