"There are a lot of ways to get around in Bowling Green carefully on bicycle and not have to hit all those busy spots."

For Anne Ellis, cycling is a part of her blood. She's been doing it for nearly two decades.

Ellis says that riding her bike around town gives her a chance to see the city and also allows her to avoid the perilous traffic scene that has been unfolding in Bowling Green lately.

"Getting around Bowling Green is not that hard if you think a little differently. You have to think differently when you're on a bike than you do when you're in a car."

The member of the Bowling Green League of Bicyclists says that not only will commuting with your bike save you from traffic hassles but it offers other benefits as well.

"You can save money and help the environment which is a lot of people's concern right now with high gas prices. You can incorporate the fitness in the activity when you're going to work or to the market. And then its just fun."

Greenways has recently opened up a bike path a mile and a fourth long to make it easier for bikers to get around town without having to ride on the major roads.

Riding in cabs or carpooling are others ways experts suggest you can help in cutting down on cars on the road at any given time.

Bowling Green also offers a public transit system which runs throughout the city daily and can put 15 to 20 people on the bus at a time and help keep more cars off the road.

"In 2005, public transit provided over 42,000 passenger trips. That would have been a lot of additional cars on the road," says Cheryl Allen of Community Action.

Ellis says while she does drive a car, she acknowledges how much fun she has when she puts on her helmet and cruises the town on her bike.

"It’s a much more calming experience than sitting in your car fighting at the red lights to get through. That means a lot at the end of the day," says Ellis.
