We do want to warn you, some of the footage in this story, some viewers may find disturbing.
On September 23rd, we brought you the story of a horse named "Copy," which is now in the care of a Caneyville woman, after his previous owner from Edmonson County allegedly shot and starved him.
Thanks to our report, an investigation of animal cruelty is underway.
Not only is Copy's story being heard locally, but people across the nation are wanting to step in and help.
It's a tough sight to see.
A horse allegedly shot and starved by his former owner.
"I've worked as a police officer for 33 years and animal or horse abuse, this is the worst I've ever seen," assured Sheriff Mike Vincent, with the Edmonson County Sheriff's Dept. "It is very malnutritioned. Without a veterinarian and this lady's assistance, that horse probably wouldn't still be living."
It's a crime now prompting an investigation by the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office.
One that officials say will be handled the same as any.
"You do it just like any other investigation. You can't just go get warrants on somebody. You have to get both sides of it and we'll have to talk to the former owner and go from there," Sheriff Vincent explained.
But it's not just local authorities taking note of Copy's story.
Many across the state and nation are wanting to step in.
"My answering machine is about to blow up with so many people calling, which is good," said Keila Edwards, the Caneyville resident now caring for Copy. "I had one woman call from New York, and she's part of the humane society in New York. Everybody's wanting to know if they can donate and be a part of this to help this horse out."
So now, a bank account has been set up in Copy's name.
One that will help the horse recover, and maybe even help others.
"If there's any money that's left over it will go to an agency that does help horses out, whatever he doesn't use," Edwards assured.
But for now, Edwards is just keeping a close eye on her horse and hopes justice will be served--not only for Copy, but for every horse that's abused.
"When other people see this they'll think twice before they do their horse this way--so it could save other horses other than Copy," Edwards said.
If found guilty, the previous owner of Copy could face jail time, fines or both.
For anyone wanting to help the abused horse, donations can be sent to "Copy," care of Keila Edwards at P.O. Box 363, in Caneyville, Kentucky 42721.
For additional information, you can e-mail Keila Edwards here.
