Governor Ernie Fletcher has fired his lieutenant governor as justice cabinet secretary.
Fletcher named Brigadier General Norman Arflack as his replacement.
Pence announced last week he would resign from the cabinet in early august.
The announcement was coupled with Pence's decision not to run with Fletcher in next year's gubernatorial race.
Robbie Rudolph, executive secretary of the governor's cabinet and Fletcher’s new running mate, called Pence and asked him to resign before August, saying the governor had someone else lined up for the position.
Pence submitted a letter saying the governor could determine the resignation effective date, which Rudolph said was effective immediately.
