Daviess County Fiscal Court has snuffed out a request by anti-smoking groups for a more stringent ban.
The court approved an ordinance in December that prohibits smoking in all public buildings that can be entered by people under age 18. The ordinance effectively banned smoking in all county restaurants that are not private clubs.
Bars, nightclubs and workplaces not open to the public are exempt from the ordinance, and restaurants are allowed to permit smoking if they contain separately ventilated smoking rooms. The American Cancer Society and Owensboro Daviess County Smoke-Free used a new report on second-hand smoke to request a tougher smoking ban.
