Franklin-Simpson Renaissance Project

Almost $12 million dollars was approved on Friday by the Transportation Cabinet for 44 transportation-related projects in Kentucky that will be funded through the federal government's Transportation Enhancement program.

The city of Franklin will see part of that money.

"The total grant was about $252,000. $200,000 will roughly come from the stae, $50,000 of that may be from local government, the city of Franklin, and maybe some from Renaissance as well", says Kevin Breeding, the Director of Economic Development for Franklin's Renaissance project.

A $200,000 dollar grant has been awarded for Phase Two of the Franklin-Simpson Renaissance Streetscape Project for the city's downtown area.

Those involved with the project say this is a big step for the community.

Recently Phase One of the Renaissance Streetscape Project was completed in Franklin's downtown area.

"It was basically to replace the aging concrete sidewalk with brick. We also did some landscaping, some planting trees and those types of things, but primarily it's the brick sidewalks. This project is going to be similar to the last one in it's going to be mostly brick sidewalks replacing concrete ones. It's going to be a continuation of that around the square", says Breeding.

This phase also includes creating brick crosswalks in the places where crosswalk traffic is the greatest which could help slow down motorists around the square.

"Not only does it look good but it designates that these are walking paths and make it safer for folks", says Breeding.

Sonny Monroe is the Director of the Renaissance Streetscape Project and says that this project will not only update the look of Franklin's downtown square but it should also help bring in more people to the area. They are already bringing in more restaurants downtown and plan to build some apartments as well.

"It takes that combination to get people back in town at night. Once 5:00 gets here people dissapear from the downtown area. We're trying to put them back on the streets", says Monroe.

Breeding says he thinks the Renaissance Project is helping to do just that.

"All of those things working together have created a downtown that it's an important part of the community and we're proud of it", says Breeding.

The following is a complete list of the all the transportation-related projects for Kentucky that were approved.
