The death of a five-year-old child Monday at Kosair Children's Hospital has been attributed to viral meningitis.
The victim was a Louisville girl, whose identity was not made known.
Officials say the child did not have bacterial meningitis, which is more contagious. Doctors say viral meningitis is more common and rarely fatal in people with a normal immune system.
The National Center for Infectious Diseases reports that as many as 50-thousand people a year are hospitalized with viral meningitis.
