A police officer's son has died as the result of an accidental shooting.

Six-year-old Zachary Tomlinson died Sunday as a result of a gunshot wound. Zachary's father, David Tomlinson, is a police officer for the Oak Grove Kentucky Police Department. According to the Associated Press, the young boy found the loaded gun and accidentally shot himself.

The tragic event is something law officers worry about everyday.

Bowling Green Master Police Officer, Shane West, says: "First my heart goes out to him and his family."

West has three children. After hearing about the accidental shooting death of 6-year-old Zachary Tomlinson, West says he worries the same thing could happen to his kids if he accidentally left his gun unprotected.

West says: "It can happen to anybody and I've been complacent at times. If my children really got nosy and wanted to get it they could have."

Captain Danny Vickous says parents should never assume just because they hide a firearm their children won't find it.

Vickous says: "They climb up on chairs and on tables get into things because kids are very curious and inquisitive by nature."

Officers say it's important to teach your children the importance of gun safety and let them know that guns are not toys and that they have consequences.

Master Police Officer, Bill Stephens, says: "Show them if you pull the trigger, the other person's not going to get up. It's a very I don't want to say dangerous instrument, but people can get hurt using it."

West says: "I know it can happen to anybody. Gun safety and education is the most important part of it. Unfortunately this brings about awareness whenever a tragic event like this happens."

If you have a gun and are interested in keeping your home safe for your children, you can pickup a gun lock at the Bowling Green Police Department. And officers say it's crucial to educate yourself about the importance gun safety so your kids don't suffer.
