St. Jude Researcher

Jason Rawlings says: "Basically I wanted to go somewhere where my research would make a difference. Where there would be some relevance and some impact. And I saw St. Jude as a place where I could do that."

Rawlings is a research scientist at Saint Jude children's
Research Hospital in Memphis. He does research that will hopefully find cures for catastrophic illnesses that affect children. Rawlings is originally from Kentucky, but says he knew Saint Jude was the only place to go to pursue the study of research science.

Rawlings says: "St. Jude is built on a community principle. So we all go to the same place to eat lunch. So you can see research staff there, clinical staff there, patients there. It allows yo to see the big picture. So I'm able to see the patients that one day my research may help."

Rawlings says the research he does takes a lot of time and sometimes he comes close to burning out... but when he sees the children who can benefit from his work it inspires him to work harder. Research is also an expensive endeavor and Saint Jude operates almost entirely off of donations.

Rawlings says: "The money that we're making is actually not money, but a cure and new treatment. So things like the Dream Home are really critical to bring money in to allow us to do the type of research we need to do to help find cures."
