Memorial Day Weekend marks the official kickoff to the summer travel season, and American tourists plan to head out in record numbers this year. The Travel Industry Association of America estimates Americans will take more than 275 million leisure trips this summer.

With the threat of terrorism and SARS abroad, many travelers are choosing to stay closer to home, meaning increased travel on the highways and backroads. Local camping and RV stores say they expect a busier-than-usual summer, which could translate into higher volume at local parks and lakes.

AAA spokesman Roger Boyd says travelers should always remember the "3 P's" before heading out the door.
1.) Prepare yourself- make sure you leave your stress and harsh emotions behind
2.) Prepare your vehicle- make sure it's in the best possible shape before loading up your family and friends
3.) Prepare your trip- make all of the necessary reservations ahead of time, and plan out your route to avoid the stress of being lost or unsure of where you're going to stay.

AAA says follow these tips, and you can be on the road to a great summer vacation.
