An Alvaton man is hoping a rare option election will allow him to sell homemade wine at his farm this spring.

Rex Reid and his wife, Diane, own Reid's Livery, where horses are boarded and Diane gives riding lessons.

But Rex is hoping voters answer "yes" to a simple question in a couple of weeks, allowing him to bring a little more business to their farm.

For Rex Reid, wine making has always been something he did for fun.

"I enjoy making wine, it's like having your own little chemistry project going on at home," said Reid, co-owner of Reid's Livery.

But now...

"My wife said we had to figure out a way to pay for this hobby of mine, so that's kind of how it evolved," Reid said.

What's evolved is a local option election, and it's getting the attention of many.

"What some people may not be aware of is Warren County is dry and Bowling Green is wet. In order for me to sell my product at the farm, I'm asking my neighbors," Reid said.

Reid filed a petition with the clerk's office for the rare election.

"I was required to get 80 signatures, and I got 180 signatures. I ran into very few people who were opposed to it," Reid explained.

His permits are ready, and his recipes are finished.

Now all neighbors have to do is answer a simple question.

"Are you in favor of the sell of wine at the Reed Livery Winery?" read Nancy Stacker, Warren County deputy clerk.

"There are 890 people in that precinct. It will be for the Drake precinct only," Stacker said.

And once the ballots are in, Reid hopes a new business will follow from his hobby and those that have tasted his wine will hopefully follow too.

"They certainly liked it when I gave it to them as Christmas presents, so I'm not sure how they're going to like it when I ask them to pay for it but we're going to find out," Reid laughed.

Nancy Stacker says this is the first special election that Warren County has had for a winery.

The election will take place December 16th from 6a.m. to 6p.m. at the Neel Masonic Lodge.

Rex Reid says if he's able to sell he should have blackberry, blueberry, peach and grape wine by the spring.
