Fox says she recently survived a cancer scare and wants to spend more time with her husband. Fox said she's quote -- "absolutely fine" and does not need additional medical care. Fox's resignation is effective Sept. 1, 2006.
Fox is a former executive director and CEO at Kentucky Educational Television.
Governor Fletcher is appointing Deputy Education Secretary, Laura E. Owens, as Fox's successor.
The governor first announced Fox's appointment back in November 2003.
Before her retirement, Fox was one of four remaining cabinet secretaries in Fletcher's original executive cabinet. The others are Secretary LaJuana Wilcher, head of the state's Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, and Economic Development Secretary, Gene Strong.
Former Finance and Administration Cabinet Secretary, Robbie Rudolph, is now Fletcher's executive cabinet secretary.
