According to law enforcement officials, the former schoolteacher suspected in the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey was tracked online by Boulder police.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, federal officials tell The Associated Press the suspect is a 42-year-old American named John Mark Karr. They say Karr had been communicating with somebody in Boulder, who was cooperating with police.

An attorney for Ramsey's family says the family had given authorities information about the man, but would not say how they knew him.

The six-year-old beauty queen was found dead in the family's home nearly 10 years ago. Her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, had long been under suspicion, and their attorney now says they've been vindicated.

JonBenet Ramsey's father said he and his wife had talked to law enforcement about the suspect who's now under arrest.

In a statement issued by his lawyer, John Ramsey doesn't name the individual. But he said his wife, Patsy, was aware that authorities were close to making an arrest when she died in June from ovarian cancer.

He said they'd talked to the Boulder, Colorado's district attorney about the suspect, though the statement doesn't indicate when that discussion took place.

John Ramsey said that had his wife lived to see this day he has no doubt she would've been as pleased as he is.

Ramsey also thanked law enforcement, singling out Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy.

A press conference will be held on Thur., Aug. 17, 2006.
