"Spiked Egg Nog" and other alcoholic beverages are part of the holiday season tradition.
But one too many of these drinks can cause deadly results on the highways.
Nearly 40% of all accidents that will take place on the roads over the next three weeks will be the result of drunk drivers.
But the Kentucky State Police are hoping their presence on the roads will keep potential killers off the road.
"I would say I've definitely been involved in and seen several accidents where alcohol's been a contributing factor," notes Trooper Jason Lanham.
Trooper Lanham has made 38 DUI-related arrests this year, the most by any trooper at the Bowling Green post.
"Most all police officers take pride in knowing they are taking someone under the influence off the roadways, whether it be a normal day of the holiday season," explains Lanham.
Trooper Lanham says the amount of people driving drunk this holiday will most assuredly rise.
"People get together with their families and possibly drinking then driving back home, you do have a lot more of that during the holiday season," Lanham notes.
It doesn't have to be large quantities of alcohol for some people to become inebriated.
"It might only take a female 1 or 2 drinks to a small man, 1 or 2 drinks to be impaired when it could take a bigger person who just got done eating, several," Lanham states.
With the increased number of drinkers taking to the road this holiday season, Lanham offers you some tips to spot an impaired driver while you are traveling.
"Erratic driving, people driving back-and-forth across their lane of travel, maybe traveling into on-coming lanes," says Lanham.
KSP will conduct sobriety checkpoints closer to the Christmas holiday.
He also encourages motorists who notice people driving erratically and suspect them of being under influence... call KSP at (270) 782-2010.
