On Aug. 29, 2006, the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Bowling Green restaurants and other area dine-out establishments have a chance to contribute a portion of their proceeds from the day to Share Our Strength's Restaurants for Relief 2 hurricane recovery effort.
Restaurants from coffee shops, to family-runned businesses and even to four-star establishments can participate, but as of Aug. 25, 2006, only a few South-Central restaurants have registered. Even though, the Hurricane Katrina fund raising event is in the near future restaurants can still register up to the day of, by visiting www.strength.org.
Last year efforts brought in an amazing 1.2 million dollars of which they directly donated to hurricane ravaged communities. So far 1,500 restaurants across the country are signed up for this year's program, and locally ran 440 Main, located on Fountain Square here in downtown Bowling Green, is participating and donating 10% of their proceeds.
Support of this effort will help rebuild school cafeterias, open summer meal programs and much more. Even a percentage of the funds will specifically benefit restaurants and hospitality workers in the affected areas.
Share Our Strength's Restaurants for Relief 2 is presented by American Express and is organized in partnership with Food Network and the National Restaurant Association.
