Hospital Prepares for More Babies

Greenview Regional Hospital announced in April it wouldn't deliver babies after September 1, 2006 in order to focus its resources more on the area's changing health care needs.

We're told the last delivery at Greenview was scheduled Monday.
This leaves pregnant patients with only one other option in town, The Medical Center.

Administrators there say they've been planning for additional births since Greenview's announcement. They've hired additional staff, added beds, purchased more equipment and plan to remodel the labor and delivery area.

"We just want everybody to feel assured we will provide excellent care to them and their babies the way we have provided for years."

Prior to Greenview's announcement, The Medical Center delivered about 2,000 babies each year.

Monday, The Medical Center also announced its new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The hospital has formed a partnership with Vanderbilt and will now be able to care for newborns with conditions like prematurity, infection and respiratory problems.

A team of neonatal nurse practitioners from Vanderbilt will work alongside registered nurses and respiratory therapists from The Medical Center to provide specialized care.
