As the city of Bowling Green continues growing, so do the number of emergency workers needed to fill new positions. Bowling Green's Fire Department recently announced it's accepting applications and thus far the response has been overwhelming.
A growing population and new OSHA regulations have created several new positions. As of Thursday, more than 300 people had requested applications from the city's Human Resources Department. Currently the BGFD employs over 100 people, but are looking to fill five positions.
The department is loosing two men to retirement and are planning on adding an additional three positions a year for the next three years.
Chief Gerry Brown says candidates nationwide are drawn by a number of factors including location, benefits and competitive pay. He also adds the tragic events of 9-11 have increased interest in the field.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Bowling Green firefighter, you can contact the city's Human Resources Department at (270) 393-3689. The deadline to request an application is July 18. Chief Brown hopes to have the positions filled by the end of October.
