Simpson County Schools Advisory Committee

Around a month and a half after the Getting to Know Your School System town forum in Franklin, Ky., another is planned.

The first forum was to discuss allegations of discrimination with-in the Simpson County School District.

Since then an advisory committee has been formed to address the community's concerns.

"Hopefully we can sit down and orchestrate some policies, and recommended those to the school board, and hopefully they can be implemented," said Wendell Stewart, the chairman of the advisory committee.

The committee consists of the superintendent, a school board member, a parent, students, a teacher and community members.

"They're working on a mentoring program, they're also looking at the demographics where the schools are as far as the percentile range as in the reading and the math," said Rev. Donzella Lee, a member of the Franklin-Simpson Human Rights Commission.

The group has also looked at parental and community involvement, test scores, and the diverse make-up of those in the school district.

"We want to make sure that everyone has some representation within our school system," Stewart said.

One of the issues the committee is working on is maintaining and retaining qualified minority teachers.

"What we'd like to do is use some of the resources that we have in our school, put together some type of team that can actually go out and sell our community", Stewart said.

There will be another forum on Sept. 12, 2006, at 6 p.m. in the Franklin-Simpson High Cafeteria. The public is invited to attend and the advisory committee will discuss what they've been working on.
