Tennessee college students are using Kentucky caves to test a new technique to clean up underground water systems.

Students at Tennessee State University were at Mammoth Cave last month to see if a technique they developed can help clean the cave's water system faster.

It normally takes 20 to 30 years for spills to naturally clean up, but the students believe that a chemical similar to dry-cleaning solvent that can speed up the process.

Environmental Engineering Professor, Tom Byl, said the same technique helped enhance fuel degradation at Fort Campbell.
