An Area Hospital Expands

As our area continues to grow in size, so does the healthcare industry serving the region. The latest medical expansion happens to be at The Medical Center in Bowling Green.

Officials at the Medical Center say the new $30 million emergency room and outpatient center will better serve those living in South-Central Kentucky. The new facility, scheduled to open in September, is being deemed as patient friendly. Officials say the addition is triple that of their current facility and its' design places an emphasis on patient privacy. The current ER has ten treatment rooms; that number will grow to 28 with the new opening. The new ER also has its' own dedicated radiology department and lab.

The trauma and waiting rooms have been enlarged greatly, while patients will now enter through one of two ways. In an effort to separate those more serious situations, the new ER has separate entrances for emergency vehicles and patients walking in for service. A new system referred to as "fast-track" will identify those patients with minor symptoms. Fast-track patients will then be treated in designated rooms and by separate physicians in an attempt to expedite care.

Officials say a year's worth of planning went into the project. In addition, input was gathered from current employees, focus groups and by visiting similar facilities. The first phase of the project is set to open in September; the second phase will open 45 to 60 days later.
