The number of black students enrolled at the University of Kentucky reaches record numbers this fall.

Two hundred and ninety-six black students enrolled this year at the university. That's nearly double last year's total of 151.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that the students are part of a 2006 freshman class totaling 4,092 - an all-time high.

Last year UK had a 40 percent drop in black students, which was heavily criticized. The school blamed the decline partly on too little scholarship money and delays in informing students how much aid they would receive. In response, the university has eight new admissions counselors and an additional $500,000 in diversity-related scholarships.
