Former Simpson Co. And Warren Co. Pastor Arrested

Following a more than year-long investigation, Kentucky State Police arrest a former Simpson county pastor.

Sixty five-year-old Richard W. "Dick" Bridges, of Bowling Green, was arrested Monday and indicted on two counts of theft, two counts of forgery, and one count of credit card fraud.

Bridges is the former pastor at Franklin Presbyterian Church, and former pastor of First Baptist Church in Bowling Green.

Bridges is accused of stealing approximately 50,000 dollars from Franklin Presbyterian, during a two-year period using various methods and schemes.

A Church's day to day operations involve a lot of love and trust on the part of the congregation, the church leaders, and the pastoral staff. One might even call it grace. Unfortunately, the church is not immune from selfishness or even darker character flaws like vindictiveness. Not knowing the details of Pastor Bridge's situation but knowing quite a bit about human nature, I can think of several unfortunate circumstances that could lead to his being set up or used as an easy target by a disinfranchised church member. If this is the case, then it would represent an equally sad though I realize not as 'media-juicy' of a story. I never knew Dick Bridges to be quick to judge, let's not be so quick to believe the worst of him.

I was a member of the church, and I know several details about the fire, the most important of which is that it didn't start anywhere near where the financial records were stored.

This is sad. But the tragedy at First Baptist had nothing to do with money, but instead was the result of bitter emotions churned up during a bad divorce. Whatever Richard did after that I don't know.
