A federal judge has temporarily suspended Kentucky's law forbidding protests near military funerals and memorial services.

U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell said today that the law goes too far in limiting free speech.

Caldwell also said the law is too broad to serve its intended purpose. The law forbids protesting within three-hundred feet of the services.

It was aimed at Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., which is known for its anti-gay protests.

Westboro Baptist issued a statement saying it would picket the funeral of Sergeant First Class Jason Keavy of Kentucky on Sept. 30, 2006.

The Kentucky General Assembly passed the law earlier this year.
