St. Jude- Samantha Elliott

"It started out, in school, I wasn't doing my normal activities because I had a lump on my leg," Samantha Elliott said.

A lump on the leg isn't unusual for an active eight year old girl involved with gymnastics like Elliott. But when it didn't clear up after several weeks they went to the doctor, who recommended St. Jude.

"I screamed and I cried and I wouldn't go. I finally said, 'Fine, I'll go, but I'm only staying for 30 minutes and I'm not talking to anybody," Elliott said.

When Elliot went to St. Jude in October 2006 she found out what the lump on her leg was.

"Osteosarcoma. A bone cancer," she said.

In January 2006 they operated on her leg and put her on a chemotherapy treatment. Elliot said she's glad she had her surgery at St. Jude because it's not like other hospitals.

"When you're in the hospital and you don't have anything to do they have child life specialist. You can go to the library or they can page a child life specialist and they can give you games or painting," Elliot said.

St. Jude also gave her a doll to explain her surgery to her. They put a straw in the dolls leg and then took it out to replicate Samantha's fibula being removed. She had another surgery in August 2006 and got to finally stop chemo. She hopes to be off of her crutches by Christmas and she has a lot to look forward to thanks to St. Jude.

"End of chemo, off crutches. End of chemo, off crutches. I really want my hair to grow back. I'm really excited about that," she said.
