A special judge rules that the city of Tompkinsville will not have to hold a special election to elect a new mayor.

According to a ruling by special Judge Ron Johnson, the city of Tompkinsville can keep the mayor the city commission voted for after the Kentucky Supreme Court ordered the 2006 mayoral election be thrown out.

In 2006, former Monroe County Sheriff Beverly McClendon won the Tompkinsville mayoral election by just one vote.

The results were contested.

After the Kentucky Supreme Court's ruling, the city commission voted that Commissioner Steve Carter will hold the position of mayor until the next election in November of 2010.

Mayor Carter says the ruling by Judge Johnson was requested to make sure everything was done legally.
