CTBS Scores Are In

The results from the spring 2003 Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) show that Kentucky students are making slow but steady progress in reading, language arts and mathematics.

End-of-primary students (3rd-graders) turned in the strongest performance, showing gains in average scores of up to three percentiles in all three subjects tested. Sixth and ninth-graders also showed improvement in most areas.

"While CTBS is a relatively small component of schools' overall accountability scores, it does provide insight into how well our students grasp basic skills," said Kentucky Education Commissioner Gene Wilhoit. "I'm pleased with the slow, steady progress of most of our schools. But, the data also show that some schools, those in the lowest percentiles, have a great deal of work to do."

The Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills/5 Survey Edition (CTBS/5) in reading comprehension, language arts and mathematics was administered in April to all students in the end of primary (3rd), 6th and 9th grades.

These scores, along with scores from the Kentucky Core Content Tests (KCCT) and non-academic indicators, will be part of a school's accountability index. Non-academic data was released in July, and KCCT scores will be released in October.

CTBS scores are released as national percentiles. The CTBS/5 was standardized in 1996; therefore, comparisons are made against norms established in that year.

The statewide scores, in national percentiles, for the past seven years are:
