Many farmers across the state are requesting bees to help out with their crops. After weak tobacco sales, many farmers are growing other crops like cantaloupes, watermelons or cucumbers, but to raise the fruit pollination is needed. More and more farmers are calling local beekeepers and asking them to raise bees close to the crops.
Cantaloupe farmer, Stephen Noe, says having hives close to the crop has been a good investment so far. In fact, after having a good year last year he's asking for more hives this year. If you're a farmer and interested in beekeeping call (270) 622-8313 or log on to: www.allenkybees.com
