Earthquake experts are drilling in Sassafras Ridge near the New Madrid Fault Line.

The goal is to put a seismometer on the bedrock 2,000 ft. down. The device will help geologists predict the impact of earthquakes that can affect areas ranging from St. Louis to Memphis.

Experts said the device will also enhance data that has already been received and can be used to update building codes. The drilling is expected to be finished towards the end of October 2006.

In 1811 the New Madrid Fault produced some of the strongest earthquakes ever known to have struck the Continental United States.
