"Everyone knows Frances Bar-B-Que".
That's what the Monroe County residents we spoke with had to say about the long-standing staple of their area that burned to the ground Friday afternoon.
After his business stood for 32 years, Frances Bar-B-Que owner David Arms says, the fire that destroyed his restaurant sparked up near the exhaust ducts.
Now, nearby residents are saying they hope this fire hasn't truly taken Frances away.
"I opened the door around 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and there was just fire trucks everywhere," remembers Frances neighbor Susan Eversole. "There was just a billow of smoke everywhere."
12 p.m. Monday.
It'd normally be the lunch hour at Frances Bar-B-Que, but three days after the fire, debris rocks back and forth in the wind while flames still flicker.
"It's disheartening," Susan says. "I hope they rebuild it.
For years, she's smelled the special bar-b-que sauce wafting up to her home.
"Living so close to it is rough because you got to hold yourself back," Susan laughs.
She says she's not the only one who found a quick bite of bar-b-que in Hestand hard to resist.
"Everyone we talked to, we tried to give them directions to get to our place, we'd say, 'Well, do you know where Frances Bar-B-Que is?', and they say, 'oh yeah'," says Monroe county resident Leigh Krueger.
"It's a great thing," Susan adds. "When we go out of town, we can tell people where we live, not by the town we live in because no one knows where Hestand is, but everybody seems to know where Frances Bar-B-Que is."
"I know it's such a shock," Leigh continues. "It's a shock to them, but they're strong people, and they're such a stable business in our community. I know they will rebuild."
"Go, go, go, come back," Susan concludes. "We miss you."
Owner David Arms says while his future plans for Frances Bar-B-Que are uncertain, he hopes to rebuild the restaurant.
