New Parks and Rec Community to be Built in Bowling Green

City commissioners voted unanimously to approve 16 bids totaling $3.3 million to expand a new parks and recreation community right next to the centers current location on Second Avenue. Improvements will be made to the old building which will also remain in operation. Mayor Elaine Walker said this change parallels the city's continued growth.

"We are so anxious to get a new center," Walker said. "We have maxed out our capacity at the old one, we can now house over 200 teams as opposed to the 150 before, so this will be well utilized."

City commissioners expressed gratitude because the project was almost a quarter million dollars under the estimated cost. Commissioners attribute having a construction manager for the savings.

City commissioners also voted unanimously on an issue that was tabled during the last meeting involving a Greenways Trail. The city will spend $300,000 to build trails looping 3.8 miles connecting downtown areas and the Parker-Bennett neighborhoods.

The Downtown Redevelopment Authority signed off on the project. The new path will provide safer routes for pedestrians.

The next city commission meeting is scheduled for Oct. 17, 2006.
