"Political Candidates 101"

Fallout from the Mark Foley scandal may have an impact on Republicans nationally, but Western Kentucky University, Political Science Professors, Scott Lasley and Saundra Ardrey don't expect the impact to trickle down to a local level.

"I think it will be a bump, but it may be one of those bumps you can smooth out between now and election time." Says Lasley

"And we like our personal and our local folks, and so it's going to be hard to say that we can translate something that's happening at the national level down to our state and local level." According to Ardrey

Lasley says it's important for voters to know where they stand on a particular issue before they can decide what candidate they want to support.

"People need to think a little about themselves before they worry about candidates, figure out what issues are important to them and where they stand on those issues."

According to Ardrey, once a voter knows themselves there are three different areas that are used to identify which candidate a person wants to vote for.

"You can do it based on party identification, by candidate, or by the issues."

Both Ardrey and Lasley say the big race voters should pay attention to leading up to election day, is the Second Congressional District race.
