Members of a small community in Logan County speak out, just days after learning their own mayor shot a man with a rifle.

According to court documents, Lewisburg Mayor Kenneth Whitson shot 57-year-old Larry Lee in the leg with a 22-caliber rifle after a verbal altercation late Thursday night.

Those in Lewisburg say the alleged incident involving one of their elected officials was a shock to everyone.

According to those at city hall, Mayor Whitson was back in the office today.

But is that what those in the community want?

"I guess I feel about Lewisburg kind of like I do my family, and this is kind of personal down here," said Joan Tooley, former mayor of Lewisburg.

For a small town, news travels fast.

"When they said the mayor of Lewisburg, I stopped and thought, 'What?'" added David Boggess, a resident of Lewisburg of nearly 30 years.

And when that mayor is accused of a shooting a man, everyone hears about it.

"I've been very interested in Lewisburg and I only want good things for it," Tooley said.

She says she's known Kenneth Whitson some 30 years.

"I think the mayor's doing alright," she said.

Tooley says Mayor Whitson has always done a good job for the community.

Others in Lewisburg agree.

"He's been on the job everyday. Any little problems we've had, he's been on top of it," Boggess said.

Regardless, he says Whitson's alleged actions Thursday night just aren't those an elected official should take.

"It's not good to hear that your mayor has shot someone. But we weren't there and we don't really now that circumstances there, ya' know?" he said.

And while Boggess says some are calling for Whitson's resignation, others say keeping the community the way it is now is what's important.

"I've always loved Lewisburg. I've worked hard for Lewisburg. I guess Lewisburg is where my heart's at and I'm not going to put it down," Tooley said.

Lewisburg City Attorney James Milam tells WBKO it's likely Kenneth Whitson will remain mayor as the case continues.

Attempts to contact Mayor Whitson at both city hall and his home Monday were unsuccessful.

Whitson is due back in court a week from May 27th.
