Wal-Mart's Generic Prescription Program

Brenda Murphy received an unexpected surprise when she went to pick up her prescriptions at Wal-Mart.

"Well, I came expecting it to be $28 because that's usually what it is and when she handed to me she said with the new program it's $4", said Murphy.

"I was shocked I was like 'Oh no my co-pays are usually between $15 and $50 on my medications', so when she told me that on the phone I was just blown away", said April Witt.

This is part of the company's new initiative to offer more than 300 generic medications for $4 for a 30 day supply.

"The generic plan offers a variety of medications that these patients are on. They're popular medications that are antibiotics,
anti-inflammatory, we have a lot of heart medications, a lot of diabetic medications on there", said Micaela Riemer, a pharmacist.

Riemer says she hopes these new price tags will weigh a little less on her patients' wallets.

"We have a lot of patients that don't have insurance or a lot of patients that their insurance premiums have risen over the years and they can't afford to pay for those", said Riemer.

For out of state residents that live near Kentucky and want to cross the border to take advantage of the new program, Riemer says it's up to the pharmacist.

"It's currently an in-state program only and it's up to the pharmacists discretion", said Riemer.

As for Brenda Murphy, she says her holidays are going to be a little happier with what she's saving at the pharmacy counter.

"I told her she'd made my year, my Christmas, my Thanksgiving, and everything", said Murphy.
