Adventures in Kentucky: Lost River Cave

Last week I tried out sky diving and this week I took my adventures underground to Lost River Cave. This is a look at what I discovered beneath the surface.

The drive of adventure is discovery, discovery of one’s self and one’s surroundings.

During an adventure in Lost River Cave, cavers discovered writing on the ceilings and several passageways. Curious about the unseen parts of the cave and the new discovery, I met with Becky Bierman, Lead Guide of Operations at Lost River.

“Just during some caving activity we were going back through the passage we noticed that there was something on the ceiling and we started looking more into it. It had specific dates: 1861, 1862; CSA, which would be Confederate States of America and US for the Union,” Bierman said.

Diving deeper into the discovery, we met Elvin Smith, Jr. Smith was a history teacher for over 30 years and is a self proclaimed Civil War buff.

“One reason you find the cave writing in here is because I’m sure the soldiers came in out of the cold and wanted to explore the cave,” Smith said.

Taking the boat tour and sitting deep within a cave, it is hard to imagine exploring such vast darkness with only a candle to guide you. That is proof in itself that the desire for adventure has always been present in the human spirit.

Aside from the cave writing, caving offers a unique perspective on the world below. In the cave, we came across all sorts of wildlife.

“We have bats and right now its prime time for the bats because its hibernation season,” Bierman said. The creatures dwelling in caves are truly one of a kind and the only way to see them and this remarkable world is to find a caving adventure of your own.
