Attempted Take-Off From Wrong Runway

Less than three months after a plane took off from the wrong runway and crashed in Lexington, Ky., a private single-engine plane almost made a similar error.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the 1976 Piper Saratoga accidentally turned onto a secondary runway as it prepared for a midnight flight. One of the air traffic controllers alerted the pilot of the mistake.

The secondary runway was reopened earlier this month for daytime use only. It was shutdown immediately after Comair 5191 crashed on Aug. 27, 2006, killing 49 of the 50 people on board. The jet crashed after it took off from the wrong runway.
